Day 11 & 12 Santorini and Katakolon

Our morning began watching the sunrise over Santorini. Our ship docked and we had to tender to shore. Look closely at the bottom of the picture and you will see the village where we first entered Santorini. We made our way to the left side where we purchased our tickets to ride the gondola to the top of the mountain.

There was another option – we could have walked up the trail you see in the center of the picture or ridden a donkey up. We chose the best option for us.

Once we reached the top we found a restaurant overlooking the houses on the cliff and had breakfast.

This yogurt with fruit and honey was delectable. I took my time eating it because it was the best I have ever had. Greek yogurt in Greece. Of course it was!

Scenes from our walk.

This is the most famous scene of Santorini. Check out our ship far below!

And we begin a new day coming into the port in Katakolon.

I think the most noticeable difference on this island is how green it is.  I loved the fields of corn and hay growing. There were several herds of goats. They are always good for a laugh aren’t they?

We chose a tourist train for this island. We passed beautiful views like this in the open air ride. Notice the ocean out on the horizon.

The first stop was in a vineyard. Olive groves with trees full of tiny olives thrive in the hot sun. The grapevines were loaded with red grapes and white grapes.

We continued on to the next stop. This was our last day of the cruise. Tomorrow would be at sea. Final destination is Venice.

We finally made it to the beach! We put on our suits and headed for the water. I left my camera behind and was overjoyed as I entered the water. It was so cool! I was so surprised. The temps that day were in the high 90’s. We could have stayed for hours but the sun was brutal. I could feel it on my skin.

We met the train at the top of the hill and headed back to the port with two hours to spare before last call for boarding our ship. Lynne had looked at reviews for food. Jimmy’s tavern hit all the marks for us and off we went.  The very best gyro I have ever eaten. I love the french fries in it.

Then the very best baklava I have ever eaten. It topped the one we had on Crete.

That evening on the ship we went looking for our last sunset sailing. We were not disappointed. As the day ended, we had to have our luggage in the hall before ten. The inevitable had arrived, it was time to move on. I’m going to miss six of my traveling buddies as we will say goodbye in the morning. Lynne and I extended our trip to another day in Venice. A few more adventures are waiting for us there.
