Light in Dark Places

Psalm 18:28

Lord, you keep the lamp of my life burning brightly.

You are my God. You bring light into my darkness.

I’ve shared a few pics and stories of the activities in my fall garden. The most recent – my monarch butterflies – in caterpillar adventures.

Isn’t this one a beauty? My four year old granddaughter refers to it as “my buddy”. Today, he is gone. I looked closely, but this season is over for him.

His days of eating, drinking and being merry have ended.

It amazes me how it is a rare thing to discover their cocoons. He has moved into the next season and his journey taken a turn.

No longer does he chew and chomp the leaves and grow fatter and longer every day.

He is about to enter a period of darkness. A time of waiting.

Many times our lives play out the same way.

Our days of eating, drinking and being merry fade in the darkness as we enter a new season.

The difference between the caterpillar and me is that I lived believing the darkness would never come.

The caterpillar worked his days preparing for it.

This scripture comforts me by assuring me that even in the darkness, God will be present with me.

The interesting part of that – the source of the Light changes. From the light of the earth – the sun – to the Light of the spirit – God.

Even though we might be living in the light of the sun these days – we don’t have to fear the dark days. God promises us He provides a Light even there.

So, I now live less fearful of what will happen when the darkness comes – not if.

The next chapter in this story is pretty incredible.

After the required time allotted for the caterpillar to be in the cocoon, it emerges back into the sunlight. But something crazy cool has happened.

In the words of my four year old -” it’s going to be beautiful”!

And we have the same hope as we enter into dark days with God and live in the promise that we will emerge into a beautiful new life with God.

“Lord, we praise You. Oh, mercy we are full of gratitude for the promises we read of even in the old text of the bible and how we know that scripture is alive and how it applies to our lives today. What a comfort Your words are to us. Please,  Lord, we ask an extra measure of comfort to fill even our darkest hours, days and sometimes entire seasons of life. We know we are not alone in those places and for that we rest our hope. Thank You for Your love, Lord. Amen”

Your traveling buddy,

Janet
