From Old Comes New

  Lamentations 3:21-24

But this I call to mind,

and therefore I have hope:

 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;

his mercies never come to an end;

  they are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness.

 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,

“therefore I will hope in him.”

Nothing is spontaneously created. Behind everything new you will find something old.

I keep a bowl in the refrigerator for chicken scraps. Noticing something had fallen to the side, I pulled this out. It’s the bottom of a bunch of bok choy.

Look what is happening here.

There was sufficient life left in the root part to generate this new growth.

This is the best self portrait I could ever have hoped for. It shows the heart of the plant to survive. Looking in the mirror this morning, I see the same determination in my heart – to survive – to grow – to become something new.

The best part of what I see is the new growth. The determination to become a new thing. Through the steadfast love of the Lord and His mercies being new every morning, I stand amazed.

Every day is a new day. Every day our feet hit the floor we have an opportunity to grow. So many things do their best to put out the fire in us, the determination we feel, the feelings we experience as the little broken pieces of us begin to sprout and the hope we experience as we recognize Jesus’ love for us in the process.

But we don’t travel alone.

Revelation 21:5

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.

 And we have these promises from our King, our Father and Creator who wants nothing but to spend eternity with us.

And when I read these words, another piece of me begins to sprout life. Piece by piece, the green begins to show and I love being me.

“Lord, come into the dying parts of us and bring them back to life. Give us more green to reflect Your presence in our lives. We praise You, Father. Remove the dead pieces of our old selves and raise us up new. Thank You, Father God. Amen”
