Matthew 7:7-11
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
We have a new place in town. Coffee. Pastries. Food. Bread.
Quite amazing, the love we have for bread. Historically, bread is mentioned from the earliest times recorded.
Spiritually and physically, bread is mentioned many times in the bible.
Reading this passage of scripture this morning, when I came to the part in verse 9 asking me a question – I could only stop and remember sitting on this mountain one day where it is believed Jesus fed the multitudes with the loaves and fishes. (Matthew 14:13-21)
And the question resonates deep in my heart as a mother. I would move mountains to provide the proper nourishment for my kids and grandkids and I know you would do the same. No,we would not hand them a stone.
And God never gives us a stone.
I have learned that even in times that feel as though I am living in famine, to ask God to show me what nourishment I am to receive in that place.
And he does.
Wherever you find yourself today – in feast or in famine – be assured God is preparing bread for you – not a stone.
“Lord, fill us with the spiritual bread – the bread of life You provide for us. Help us see just what that is. Help us remember that when we trust You and believe in Your truths, that You will provide. We praise You, Father and love You. Amen”
